Man gets 7-years RI for rape

Mangaluru: The Sixth Additional District and Sessions Court here on Tuesday awarded seven year of rigorous imprisonment (RI) to a 35-year-old man found guilty of raping a woman.

The convicted is Rama alias Dasaiah, a native of Chikkamagaluru was employed as a mason in Mangaluru.

The victim, a coolie worker had migrated to the city along with her parents and was residing in one portion of shed provided by a contractor. In the other portion, the accused was staying alone.

The incident occurred on January 11, 2018 when the victim (aged around 20 then) did not go to work as she was not keeping well. Upon coming to know that the victim was alone at home, Dasaiah returned to the shed and sexually assaulted her by promising to marry her. He continued to rape her since then after which she became pregnant.

The girl’s family came to know of it only when she was six months into pregnancy.

Though they approached the man asking him to marry, he refused saying he already had a wife and two children.

The girl lodged a complaint with the police and he was arrested in June 2018.

The victim later delivered a baby girl. A DNA examination proved that he was the biological father of the child. Seven witnesses had deposed before the court.

Judge Sayeedunnisa, in her verdict on Wednesday, also imposed a fine of Rs 45,000 on the convict and ordered him to deposit Rs 50,000 in the name of the baby fathered by him.

A sum of Rs 25,000 out of the total fines will be given to the victim as compensation.
