New Delhi: Following PM Modi’s appeal to switch off lights for nine minutes at 9 pm on April 5, concerns were raised that this may cause instability in the grid and fluctuation in voltage which may harm the electrical appliances. However, the power ministry has clarified that these apprehensions are misplaced.

In a series of tweets the Power ministry said that Prime Minister has urged people to switch off lights at their residences voluntarily for nine minutes but other home appliances eg fridge, air conditioners, TV, fans etc need not be switched off.

Moreover the lights in Hospitals and all other essential services like Public Utilities, Municipal Services, Offices, Police Stations, Manufacturing Facilities, etc will remain on.

The Indian electricity grid is robust, stable and adequate arrangements and protocols are in place to handle the variation in demand, reads one of the tweet.
