Belthangady: Hundreds of dead fish were washed ashore in Somavathi rivulet in Belthangady in a case of suspected poisoning of the water.
The rivulet supplies water to several wards in Belthangady Town Panchayat.
According to the locals, few persons were seen around the river last night. They however fled the spot upon seeing the police.
Locals suspect that these persons may have poisoned the water in order to catch fish easily and in large numbers.
Town panchayat chief officer Sudhakar and others visited the spot.
