Mangaluru: A serving Home Guards member here is distributing food to labourers, street dwellers and beggars every day before reporting for duty.
Sumitra has been working at the Urwa police station for the past 4 years under the Home Guards organisation. She resides at Juppu Kudupadi with her husband Prem, a lineman at MESCOM, and their son and two daughters.
An incident, experienced by Sumitra a few days ago, prompted her to provide food to the needy. She and her daughter were out to buy medicines at Kankanady. While returning on their scooter, they noticed two beggars near the bus stop at Father Muller Hospital.
When Sumitra gave them Rs 10, they instead asked for food. She brought food from home prepared for her family.
Since that day, Sumitra has continued this service. Every morning, she prepares food for 50-60 people and distributes them before 7:30 am when she leaves for work.
Speaking to Udayavani, Sumitra stated that she had grown up in a poor family at Bantwal’s Ira village. Her family too had gone through days when they had nothing to eat and were provided food by neighbours. Those experiences have made her enjoy sharing with people in their times of need.
