Bengaluru: A Twitter campaign demanding resignation of home minister Basavaraj Bommai was trending on Wednesday in the backdrop of the row over the arrest and subsequent ill-treatment meted out to CRPF commando Sachin Sawant in Belagavi.

The campaign, #ResignHMBommai has garnered over 27k tweets as of Wednesday night.

Reacting to a news update, stating that the state government is likely to withdraw the case against the Cobra Commando, Yuva Brigade founder and social activist Chakravarty Sulibele said that after this kind of brutal assault withdrawing the case is definitely not enough. Take resignation of HM or suspend SP, Belagavi, he tweeted.

Sharing images of bruises in the commando’s buttocks in a tweet, Sulibele said, “The issue of Cobra commando could have been solved easily by SP or the local leaders or finally by Home minister at least. But looks (like) total incompetence. Time to #ResignHMBommai or take the action immediately. @BSBommai.”

In yet another tweet the right-wing commentator cited instances of Padraynpura assault, no protection to ASHA workers and the latest ill-treatment to the CRPF personnel

CRPF commando SachinSavant has brutally beaten by Belagavi Police. Its a shame on entire police dept and Home Minister should held responsible for this, tweeted one user.

“Justice should be prevailed even for politicians’ kins who regularly violate the rules. Why you are targeting the innocent soldier Mr.Bommai #ResignHMBommai,” read another tweet.

Another tweet stressed on protocols to be followed while arresting an army personnel. “Protocol to be followed to arrest: Nearest military station headquarters need to be informed in written letter along with memorandum of arrest. The officer will be taken in custody by an IPS or state police officer of rank of equivalent or above seniority. #ResignHMBommai”

Meanwhile Sachin Sawant was released from jail after securing bail from the 1st JMFC court at Chikkodi. A probe has been ordered into the incident.
