Uppinangadi, Udupi: About 34 kilometres from the town, at Adarshanagar in Nekkiladi gram panchayat, a strange phenomenon is being reported.

A strange noise is heard from under the grounds near the Puttur-Uppinangadi highway here. The noise lasts for about 20-30 seconds and occurs 4-5 times in a day.

One such occurrence was reportedly experienced at about 10:15 am on May 5.

Prabhakar Nayak, a local resident spoke to Udayanivam: “Earlier these noises were rare but now they are occurring many times in a day. I also heard the noises at my house’s car parking area and the ground vibrated as well. Many of my neighbours too have experienced it.”

A MESCOM lineman Sabanna narrated his experience, “A week ago, I and another MESCOM lineman arrived at Adarshnagar, to check a power line fault. At around 10 pm, I was standing near the tourist. Then the earth started shaking with a loud noise. There was no lightning or thunder. I ran to one of the houses nearby, a resident of the house too heard and felt it.”

Sabanna added, “This area is full of large underground monolithic stone beds. About 50 years ago stone quarrying work was done here.”

However, local geologist Udaya Shankar says that the noises are nothing to fear about. He states that a hot spring exists at the harbour between Uppinangadi and Guruvayanekere and also at Irde near Panaje. The springs here run deep and in some cases, it is possible to hear loud noises due to the built-up pressure underneath the ground.
