Bengaluru: Former underworld don Muttappa Rai, 68, died late Thursday, May 14.

Rai, who ruled the criminal underworld for more than three decades, has been involved in tens of murders, extortion, and intimidation cases.

His rise to power is claimed to have been after he assassinated don Jayaraj of Bengaluru in association with ‘Oil Kumar.’ He then went into hiding in Dubai after creating fake documents and ran a private company there by the name of N M Rai.

In 2002, the UAE government handed over Rai to India. Rai was interrogated by several investigation agencies in the country, including the CBI and RAW.

In India, he received clean chit at the court in Karnataka. He had claimed all the charges against him were false.

After coming back he founded many organisations, Jai Karnataka being prominent amongst them and kept himself involved in many socio-political activities.

Recently, after underworld gangster Ravi Pujari was arrested by the CCB, he was accused of being involved in illegal activities of money laundering, extortion, threatening life and other crimes with Poojary in various parts of the state, including Bengaluru and Mangaluru. The CCB had even questioned Rai at his home regarding this and filed a statement.

Muthappa Rai died at Bengaluru’s Manipal Hospital. His body has been taken to his home in Magadi where, sources close to the family informed, the family has decided to hold the funeral next to the memorial of the first wife.
