Belthangady: Over 50 monkeys found dead; poisoning suspected

Belthangady: More than 50 monkeys’ carcasses were found at Bandaru gram panchayat in the taluka here on Friday, May 15.

The carcasses were found on the Kundalapalke-Padmunja road in Bandar village. Locals had seen the monkeys’ carcasses at 8:30 pm on the night of Thursday, May 14 and had informed authorities about it.

The place was visited by Kaniyuru health centre’s medical assistant Swatantra Rao and Ujire health centre’s Medical Officer, Forest Department staff, veterinarians and local Panchayat officials.

Veterinarians have suspected poisoning of the monkeys. Samples from few carcasses have been sent to the Veterinary Hospital at Mangaluru.

A few days ago, it was reported that starving monkeys were roaming around Charmadi forest. It is being suspected that the monkeys have been killed and thrown at Bandaru for damaging farms.
