World Environment Day celebrated on June 5, stresses on the importance of everyone’s active participation in environment conservation and sustainable living

In 1972, the United Nations General Assembly established the World Environment Day on the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment

The day was first observed in 1974 in the city of Spokane in the USA to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the environment.

The campaign was first held with the theme “Only One Earth” during the first day of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment.

According to United Nations, “The celebration of this day provides us with an opportunity to broaden the basis for an enlightened opinion and responsible conduct by individuals, enterprises, and communities in preserving and enhancing the environment”

The World Environment Day 2020’s theme is ‘Celebrate Biodiversity‘, and it will be hosted in Colombia, in partnership with Germany.

According to UN, recent events, from bushfires in Brazil, the United States, and Australia to locust infestations across East Africa and now, a global disease pandemic demonstrate the interdependence of humans and the webs of life, in which they exist.

Also, The emergence of Covid-19 has underscored the fact that, when we destroy biodiversity, we destroy the system that supports human life.
