Microsoft said that it will not be selling its facial recognition technology to police departments until there is a federal law regulating its use
Microsoft promotes facial recognition technology as part of its Azure cloud computing business. It says developers can embed facial recognition into apps for a seamless and highly secured user experience
Brad Smith, Microsoft’s chief legal officer, said, “This is a moment in time that really calls on us to listen more, to learn more and most importantly to do more. Given that, we’ve decided we will not sell facial recognition to police departments in the U.S. until we have a national law in place grounded in human rights that will govern this technology”
However, The company did not confirm whether it sold the technology to other government agencies, including Customs and Border Protection or the Department of Homeland Security
