Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a complete nation-wide lockdown on March 24 as the COVID-19 pandemic appeared in the country. It was later extended to May 31.
The lockdown froze the pace of the country. Especially the technology sector which had a serious positive as well as a negative impact.
While apps such as Ludo King and Aarogya Setu became hugely popular, many other apps have fallen into disuse.
Here’s the list of such apps:
Maps and navigation: Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze and many other location and navigation apps declined during the lockdown. Google Maps, took immediate attention to it and somehow managed to retain its presence with a feature that informs areas affected by COVID-19.
E-commerce: E-commerce apps such as Amazon, Flipkart, Big Basket etc had the lowest number of users during the lockdown as most of them had their services shut down. However, when the lockdown guidelines loosened, they started supplying groceries and other goods, especially in Green and Orange zones in the country.
Travel booking: Lockdown had a serious impact on tourism. The number of people who use apps like Yatra, Make My Trip has decreased significantly.
Entertainment: Movie shoots were halted during the lockdown, so were film screenings in movie theatres. Book My Show app lost almost most of its users. Although streaming apps such as Netflix, Disney+Hotstar and others saw more user turnout.
