Aati Amavasya: Police lathicharge meat buyers for flouting lockdown norms in Kadaba

Kadaba: Despite the lockdown, people thronged meat stalls in the city on Monday, July 20, throwing the social distancing norms to the wind.

As Coastal Karnataka celebrates Aati Amavasya on Monday, people thronged at the meat stalls in the area. There was a high demand for meat, and many traders were unable to wrap up their business before 11 am.

In order to control the crowd, the police were reportedly used lathi-charge on people at Kadaba.

Aati Amavasya is an auspicious day in the Hindu calendar. It is believed that on this day Lord Shiva was taken over by Parvathi’s devotion towards him and accepted her as his wife, therefore, it happens to be a sacred day for people of Coastal Karnataka which they eagerly look forward to.

It is believed that scraping the bark of ‘Paale’ (Satni Rooku in Konkani, Devil’s or Spirit’s Tree), and drinking a tea made out of this bark by boiling it with some other ingredients like garlic, turmeric, and fenugreek seeds works as a magic potion that provides them with immunity against diseases that are specific for the rainy season, as well as work against evil effects of past sins.
