Mangaluru: In a novel attempt to promote afforestation, Mangaluru North MLA Bharath Y Shetty has announced prizes for those coming forward to plant saplings of trees and rear them in his constituency.

Prizes amounting to Rs 10 lakh, Rs 5 lakh and Rs 2 lakh will be given to people who nurture trees at booth-level in his constituency, Shetty said in a statement.

He said it is a message to the society that the love for the environment should not be limited to celebrating World Environment Day and Vanamahotsava.

Shetty said saplings planted in each booth will be inspected every year.

The booth which has nurtured the plants well during the period of its growth will be evaluated and prizes announced.

The amount will be disbursed through his MLA fund, he said.

At least five saplings should be planted and nurtured, while there is no maximum limit for the number of saplings that can be planted, he said and hoped booth-level workers will be enthused by the offer and start building a green cover for the city.
