Shimoga: A 104-year-old freedom fighter from the district Huchurayappa passed away on Tuesday, August 18.
Huchurayappa was part of the Quit India movement which was significant for Esuru village in Shikaripur constituency.
Huchurayappa had received many awards for his bravery during the Quit India movement.
Esuru’s Quit India movement
The year of the Quit India movement was significant for Esuru. On September 28, 1942, the residents of Esuru refused to pay tax to the British government. Expecting a backlash, they prepared to face the British. They put up a board reading, ‘Swaraj Sarkar’, and hoisted the tricolor.
When British officials tried to enter Esuru, there was a ‘riot’ which led to the death of a revenue officer and a revenue ‘amaldar’. Red-faced, the British government sent police troops to reclaim the village. Esuru paid a price for the rebellion — five youth were hanged and hundreds were imprisoned.
