Bengaluru: Police sub-inspector Shantappa Jadammanavar recently earned appreciation from Education Minister Suresh Kumar for going beyond the call of his duty and taking the initiative to tutor migrant kids who do not have facilities for online education.
Shantappa , a native of Ballari arrives at a neighborhing slum area at 7 am each morning and spends around one-hour teaching Vedic mathematics, simple science and general knowledge to the 40-odd children here. Apart from this he also narrates motivational stories and also sensitizes them on issue of child marriage and sexual abuse.
For nearly a month now, Shantappa has been following this routine before reporting for work at the Annapoorneshwari Nagar police station in Bengaluru.
Suresh Kumar who had visited the slum area located in Vinayaka Nagar 9th block within Nagarbavi area on Thursday was moved to see the PSI taking classes for the children. In a Facebook post later, Kumar shared this inspirational story along with several photos of Shantappa teaching the kids.
“I am proud of the police officer. While police officials have made the news for the wrong reasons, this kind of example increases the pride of the police department,” the post read.
Shantappa himself is a son of a migrant laborer and is aware of the difficulties faced by these workers. As schools have been shut since March, and these children do not have gadgets for online education, Shantappa came up with the idea of imparting classes to children from Class 3-10.
A policeman must ensure law and order as well as create good human beings. I am doing my bit for the society, says Shantappa.
