Australia-based researchers create electronic skin that can feel pain

Researchers at Australia’s RMIT University have developed electronic skin that can mimic the body’s feedback response and react to pain

According to Engadget, The researchers from Melbourne’s RMIT University have developed the prototype to mimic real human skin in the hope it could work as a viable alternative to invasive skin grafts and prosthetics. It fires signals with the same lightning speed that nerve signals travel to the brain.

Lead researcher Professor Madhu Bhaskaran said the invention opens doors for better prosthetics, smarter robotics and non-invasive alternatives to skin grafts.

The researchers had been inspired by ‘Star Wars’ to create the electronic skin and the findings have been published in Advanced Intelligent Systems,
