Puttur: A police official, Ranjit Kumar Rai, saved the life of a COVID-19 patient on the verge of death by donating plasma from his body.

Rai is a head constable working in the Superintendent of Police’s office at Mangaluru. He is a resident of Keyuru village here.

Purnananda, a retired bank manager based in Brahmavara, was being treated for COVID-19. He was in a life-and-death condition as his blood plasma levels were low.

When Rai learnt of Purnananda’s condition, he donated 450 ml of blood plasma at Deralakatte’s KS Hegde Hospital.

Thereafter, it was reported that Poornananda’s health was recovering.

Ranjit Kumar Rai has now become the first person in the district to donate blood plasma related to the police department. A total of 16 people from the general public in the district have donated plasma. Ranjit is the 17th.

Ranjit, son of Ganesh Rai and Ratnavati Rai, is an ace athlete. He won prizes in Kho-Kho and long-distance race category during his student years. He was selected to the Police Department while in his PUC-I studies at Keyuru PU College in Puttur taluk.
