Mangaluru: City Corp to fully implement waste management rules from Oct 2

Mangaluru: Municipal commissioner Akshay Sridhar stated that from October 2 all residents in the 60 wards of the Mangaluru City Corporation must segregate their household waste for disposal into dry and wet or else pay fines.

Addressing a news conference here, he said that collection of dry waste will be done daily and wet waste only on Fridays.

He added that failure to segregate waste will incur penalties under the Corporation’s Solid Waste Management and Sanitation Bylaws 2019.

“Accordingly, households and street vendors will have to pay a fine of Rs 1,500 to Rs 5,000 while heavy waste producers will have to pay Rs 15,000 to 25,000 for violations. Throwing waste in open spaces will attract a fine between Rs 1,500 and Rs 25,000. Not segregating bio-medical waste will incur a penalty between Rs 10,000 and Rs 25,000 while disposing of construction debris in an open area will be penalised with a fine of Rs 25,000,” the commissioner said.

Additionally, he stated that the sale or use of plastic carry bags will be prohibited within the City Corporation limits. The violators would be fined between Rs 1,500 and Rs 25,000.

“No advertising posters, cutouts, flex boards will is allowed to be installed without permission in the city. A cleanup operation against them has already been launched,” he added.

Speaking at the occasion, Mayor Diwakar Pandeshwar said that penalty-free payment of property tax has been extended from September 30 to October 31. Fine would be imposed on taxes paid after November 1.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner Dr Santosh Kumar, Revenue Officer Binoy and other officials were present at the conference.
