International Day of Girl Child is being celebrated today. According to UNICEF, every year on 11 October, the International Day of the Girl, UNICEF launches an annual campaign with girls to amplify their voices and stand up for their rights.
This year, under the theme, “My voice, our equal future”, UNICEF urges us to seize the opportunity to reimagine a better world inspired by adolescent girls – energized and recognized, counted and invested in.
International Day of Girl Child this year marks 25 years of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action for working towards empowering girls and their rights globally. The Beijing Declaration is one of the first “most comprehensive international agreements on women’s rights and gender equality”.
Union Minister Smriti Irani tweeted, “On International Girl Child Day, let us work towards ensuring gender parity in our society & reaffirm our commitment to ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’”
