Cricket commentator and former England international Isa Guha has broken her silence after being dragged into a sexism scandal by ex-BBC colleague Geoffrey Boycott.
Geoffrey Boycott had stated that BBC is preferring ‘equality over quality’ after he was axed from their radio commentary team in June. While he didn’t name Isa directly, some media outlets had reported that the 2009 World Cup winner replaced Boycott in the panel.
He also said “I think long after I am dead there will be a government come along who will take away the BBC’s funding and they will have to go private, out into the real world like ITV and Sky because at the top, it is not run particularly well”
Guha whose parents are from India, has become one of the most respected commentators in world cricket. She played 113 internationals for England across all three formats and has worked with the BBC for a decade. She is currently the lead presenter and ball-by-ball commentator for BBC’s Test Match Special (TMS) radio programme. She also works with Fox Sports in Australia.
As reported by Indian Express, It wasn’t only Boycott but the way his comment was portrayed by the Daily Mail,. Daily Mail said that Boycott was “dropped… for a younger multi-racial line-up”.
Reacting to Boycott’s remark, Guha tweeted, “Some thoughts on the Daily Mail article this morn”, Guha wrote in a note to Twitter. “I tend to ignore these articles and realise that, by reacting, it only fulfils the objectives of the headline; but having been subjected to this over the last few years I just wanted to say a few things”.
