Assistant Scientist at DRDO, friends on a mission to free city trees from nails and staples

Bengaluru: The world has entered an ‘era of pandemics’, and unless we halt the destruction of the natural world,  pandemics will be more frequent. In one such bid to save the mother earth, an assistant scientist at Defence Research and Development Organisation and his friends have taken up an initiative to remove unwanted objects like nails and staple pins from trees in Bengaluru.

While most of us love spending Sundays sitting at home and relaxing, Vinod Kartavya along with five of his friends roam around the streets of Bengaluru to free the trees from posters and advertisements posted, nailed or stapled on them.

Vinod Kartavya and his team have also posted a ‘Nail Free Tree’ challenge on social media, encouraging people to post their photos after removing nails from trees, and this initiative has been getting a good response.

Taking to Twitter Vinod Kartavya wrote, “Request BBMP commissioner to make a law on illegal posters on trees. Today was the 3rd Sunday of the campaign. Collected around 200 nails and countless pins. We will not stop, will continue every Sunday.”

Vinod decided to start this campaign after a nail sticking out of tree hurt the back of his head while leaning. Putting nails on a tree not only dangerous humans but it also hurts the tree.

As per the Tree Protection Act and Bangalore Municipal Act, sticking posters on trees is illegal, however, the rule is hardly followed and adding to it the fact that the enforcing of the law is negligent.
