Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation on Wednesday, December 3 approved the demolition of the Central Market building. The decision was taken during the council meeting, chaired by Deputy Mayor Vedavathi.

The 50-year-old building, which is in dilapidated condition, houses shops of 31 licensed traders and approximately 470 other traders.

Recently, an agency was contracted to study the structural condition of the Market building. The agency recommended that the building cannot be repaired and must be demolished.

Notices to vacate the Market premises have already been served to the traders.

A new market building will be constructed after the demolition of the old one by the Mangaluru Smart City Limited at an estimated cost of Rs 145 crores under the Public-Private Partnership model.

During the COVID-19-induced lockdown in April and May, all the traders in the Market were shifted to the APMC’s yard at Baikampady on the outskirts of the city.
