M’luru boat tragedy: Srinivas Poojary hands over compensation to kin of deceased

Mangaluru: Minister for Fisheries and Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Kota Srinivas Poojary on Thursday, December 3 handed over Rs 6 lakh compensation each to the families of six victims of the Mangaluru fishing vessel tragedy.

Six fishermen drowned after their boat capsized near an estuary, about 8 nautical miles off the Mangaluru coast.

The deceased are Preetham, 28, Panduranga Suvarna, 58, residents of Bokkapatana, Mohammed Hassainar, 28, Mohammed Ansar, 32, Chinthan, 21, and Ziaullah, 36.

Shreeraksha, a deep-sea fishing boat had sailed from Mangaluru fishing harbour, early on Monday, and was expected to return on Tuesday morning. The boat was carrying close to 20 tonnes of fish .

Following the incident, the Democratic Youth Federation of India demanded a compensation of Rs 25 lakh each to the families of the victims as well as a government job to one family member each at a condolence meeting at Bengre. DYFI said one of the fishermen, Nizam Bengre, displayed extreme valour in the rescue of 18 of his peers by releasing dinghy boats with great difficulty.
