Udupi: Central team visits flood-affected areas

Udupi: A team of central government officials visited the district on Monday, December 14 to conduct a survey of the damage caused by September 18 floods.
Before visiting the flood-affected areas the team had a meeting at the deputy commissioner’s office where they expressed appreciation of the locals for their timely efforts in conducting the relief operations on the night of the devastating floods.
The team first visited and inspected the damage at the Paskudru area of Perampalli near Udupi. Later, they visited the Baje dam and inspected its pumping station which was submerged during the floods. They also visited Manai near Bommarabettu and saw the three houses that were completely ruined by the floods.
The team also visited and inspected the damaged vented dam at Kukunje in Karkala taluk, a damaged bridge at Naduru in Brahmavara taluk and the cyclone shelter at Kundapura taluk.
The team gathered information from the locals in the flood-affected areas including details about the temporary relief and necessary assistance provided by the district administration to them.
Deputy Commissioner informed the team that a total of 77 villages were damaged and 2,874 people from 827 families were rescued during the day of the floods. 31 relief centres have been opened where 1,201 people were sheltered. 3,694 houses were damaged with the total loses from the floods amounted to Rs 323.7 crores.
MLAs Raghupathi Bhat, Lalaji Mendon, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ regional chief engineer Sadanand Babu, Deep Shekhar Singhal, Senior Scientist at KSNDMC Dr CN Prabhu, Zilla panchayat CEO Dr Naveen Bhat, SP Vishnuvardhan, Assistant Deputy Commissioner Sadashiv Prabhu, Kundapur divisional officer Raju and other officials were present during the visits.
