Udupi: The long-awaited extension of the National Highway 169(A) connecting Malpe and Thirthahalli via Parkala is expected to begin, after many disruptions, after January 15.

Land acquisition notification for the extension works at Parkala has been issued and survey officials will be visiting the site on January 13.

A separate assessment of buildings and land will be taken up by the survey officers. Already the land losers’ compensation amount has been released for the purpose.

In the district, a total of 31.987 kilometres of the road at 12 places including Manipal, Udupi and Hebri will be four-laned. Of this, the land acquisition and works from Manipal to Kadiyali at a cost of Rs 99.86 crore has been completed.

Usually, the extension works should start after the issuance of the 3A land acquisition notification. However, the process was halted due to the COVID-19-induced lockdown. Hence the entire process had to be started again which was the reason for the delay, officials informed.

Apart from this about 900 metres of land required for the works are private. The present notification has been issued while the dispute over the acquisition of these land continues.

The four-laning of roads will be done from Malpe to Thirthahalli covering Ranjadakatte, Megaravalli, Naluru, Guddekere, Hosuru, Agumbe, Someshwara town, Someshwara village, Hebri, Parkala, Manipal and Udupi.

A bypass will be built at Perdur and Heriyadka. The rest of the road will be two-laned including those covering areas of Agumbe Ghat, Kaimara, Guddekere, Hosuru, Agumbe, Theerthahalli, Ranjadakatte, Mulabagilu, Megaravalli and Naluru.
