Karkala: This time the highest number of registrations for the National Talent Search (NTS) and National Means cum Merit Scholarship (NMMS) examinations were reported to be from the State.
Most of the students appearing for the examinations will be from the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts while the highest number of registrations was from Puttur and Karkala taluks.
The NTS and NMMS examinations are held for classes 8 and 10 respectively to overcome the dearth of general knowledge among young people and preparing them to appear for competitive examinations.
Until recent years, the number of people writing these examinations was not as per expectations. however, this year more students, from urban and rural areas, have shown interest in these examinations.
Presently, training sessions are being held for these examinations in all districts of the State under the stewardship of district and taluk level nodal officers.
The examinations were scheduled for November 2020 but had to be rescheduled to January 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Those who pass the NTS examination receive a scholarship and those passing the national-level examination are then eligible for scholarships upto higher education. Whereas those who pass the NMMS examination receive Rs 12,000 scholarship every year from classes 9 to 12 (PUC-II).
“These examinations take place at the high school level. The experience from appearing in them enables the students to appear for civil services and various competitive examinations. This time more students from different districts of the State have applied for the examinations,” said Sumangala V director of Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board, Bengaluru.
“Children from rural areas should not be left behind in higher education and competitive examinations. Hence, special efforts were made in the Karkala taluk for this reason. As a result a large number of students have registered for these examinations,” read a joint statement from Karkala and Puttur MLAs V Sunil Kumar and Sanjeeva Matandur.
