New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget 2021-22 in Parliament on Monday, February 1 and, the minister made many major announcements. But leaving everything aside, what actually shocked the people were the decisions made regarding petrol and diesel.

Fuel prices in India are a major concern and the common man is the most affected by the ever-changing and ever-increasing prices. With an increase in fuel prices and the announcement of the Budget, most of the Indian citizens were left disappointed while many others shared memes on fuel price hike. In one such case, Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy took to Twitter and posted an image comparing the prices of petrol in the neighboring countries.

The image shared by the MP read, Petrol Rs 93 in Ram’s India, Rs 53 in Sita’s Nepal, and Rs 51 in Ravan’s Lanka.

Finance Minister Sitharaman announced farm cess on petrol and diesel. It was proposed that farm cess of Rs 2.5 per liter on petrol will be levied and Rs 4 per liter on diesel. With the imposition of Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess (AIDC), the Special Additional Excise Duty (SAED) rates and basic excise duty were reduced.

Along with this Special Additional Excise Duty (SAED) on unbranded petrol and diesel will see a change as well. SAED on petrol and diesel will be Rs. 11 and Rs. 8 per liter, respectively. A basic excise duty of Rs 1.4 per liter on petrol and of Rs 1.8 on diesel will be imposed.

The petrol prices in Delhi and Mumbai are at Rs 86.30 and Rs 92.86 per liter respectively. On the other hand, the prices of diesel in Delhi stands at Rs 76.48 per liter and Rs 83.30 per liter.
