Bantwal: With the aim to not to face water shortage at their homes during the summers, the students of BC Road Mondankap Carmel Girls High School have created 130 water percolation pits under the guidance of their teachers and thereby written a foreword for water revolution.

Guidance by teacher Roshan Pinto

The students created the rain water percolation pits in the vicinity of their homes under the guidance of the schools Green Future Environment Association’s guide teacher Roshan Pinto. All the students have submitted reports regarding the rainwater percolation pits that they have created at their homes based on which the total amount of water percolation pits has been ascertained. During the summer, the families of several students were facing water shortage. The teacher gave guidance to the students with the fact that only by providing water to the ground is survival possible.

Water percolation pits surrounding the house

Since there is no enough free space on the school premises, the students created the pits around their homes. A few students took assistance from their parents, while some others completed the project on their own in phases. The pit created was of 3x2x2 dimensions.

The students created the pits in the courtyard of their homes, in neighbours property, on the road side and in the forest. A student identified as Rachana created 9 pits all by herself while Harshita and Aishat Annifa have created 7 pits. Other students have created 3 or 4 pits each and have been supported by their parents. Meanwhile, the teacher Roshan Pinto has already installed rain water harvesting system to the open well at his home and is taking benefit of it. He is also encouraging the students.

Conserve water

I crated 9 rainwater percolation pits within 3 days on hilly area. It is possible for students like us to conserve water. My work has motivated my family members as well as my neighbours. My sisters too have created water percolation pits – Rachana, student
