Mangaluru: On Tuesday, Mangaluru recorded 215 mm of rainfall for four hours resulting in total damage of 16 houses and a loss to the extent of Rs 41,38,000, informed Mayor Bhasker Moily. Five houses were severely damaged and 18 partially damaged, he said addressing presspersons on June 1st.
The Mayor said that the rain which lashed the city on Tuesday was the record highest rainfall on a single day in the past 12 year period. MCC had removed silt from 90% of the major as well as small drains even this year as previous years. However due to the incessant rains the wastes from all places joined the rain water clogging the drains resulting in artificial floods, he said. He assured that the administration was taking all possible steps to mitigate the hardships faced by the people as the result of the flood.
The Mayor also blamed the unsatisfactory and delayed works of NHAI for the floods in Pumpwell and Kottara. The road near Pumpwell was dug up a few days ago, even service road has not been laid, he alleged.
Moily further informed that the Deputy Commissioner has already formed a committee to study the reasons for the artificial floods during the recent heavy rain.
