17 rivers in Karnataka polluted, states Central govt report

Bengaluru: Seventeen rivers flowing in Karnataka are polluted according to a report by the Jal Shakti Ministry.

The report states that 323 of the 351 rivers in the country are polluted.

The report was prepared from data collected by the Central Pollution Control Board and State Pollution Control Boards which monitor the pollutant level in rivers.

The main sources of river pollution are agricultural waste, open defecation, solid waste from drainage and sewer from towns and cities.

The 17 polluted Karnataka rivers listed in the report are Arkavathi, Lakshmana Tirtha, Malaprabha, Tungabhadra, Cauvery, Bhadra, Thunga, Kabini, Kagina, Asangi Nala, Kali, Krishna, Shimsha, Bhima, Kumaradhara, Netravati and Yagachi.
