Mangaluru: An incident where locals apprehended two persons attempting to install a skimming machine at an ATM and handed them to the police was reported from here.
The incident occurred at the city’s Mangaladevi area.
Locals noticed two people trying to install something on the ATM. When asked the duo tried to escape. Both of them were caught and prevented from escaping and later handed over to the police.
The entire incident was caught on a CCTV camera.
ATM skimming is a criminal act of stealing the details of an ATM such as the 16-digit ATM card number, CVC number and card PIN. This is done by installing or attaching microelectronic equipments in or over the ATM machine.
After acquiring the ATM card details, a duplicate card is created by the criminals and the details are embedded into it. This card can then be used to withdraw money.
Such card skimming incidents have been reported recently from ATMs in Mangaluru’s Chillimbi, Naguri and Kulaya.
Hundreds of ATM cardholders lost lakhs of rupees after using the ATMs here.
How to avoid being ‘skimmed’?
– Check whether there is any suspicious piece of equipment assembled over the ATM
– If in doubt, inform the nearest bank or police without using the card at the ATM
– Block ATM card if skimming is suspected
