3 achievers to receive honorary doctorate from Mangalore Varsity

Mangalore University will confer honorary doctorate degrees on– Haji U K Monu, G Ramakrishna Achar, and Prof M B Puranik — three distinguished personalities who have made significant contributions in their respective fields during the 41st Annual Convocation which is scheduled to be held on March 15, 2023.

Haji U.K. Monu, the Founder and Managing Director of Kanachur Group of Industries, Mangaluru, has been selected for the honorary doctorate degree for his remarkable contribution to the field of education, agriculture, and social services. U K Monu established the Kanachur Academy of General Education in 2002 to provide quality education to the underprivileged, especially women. He also founded Kanachur Medical College and Hospital and several other educational and health institutions.

G. Ramakrishna Achar, who was born in an economically backward family in Gangolli, Kundapura taluk, has been selected for his contributions to the field of agriculture, water management, and sewage treatment. Achar is the owner of a fabrication company that has an annual turnover of Rs 250 crores and employs more than 3000 people. His “Elixir” brand water purifier has become standard equipment for water distribution in public places in the country and abroad.

Prof M B Puranik, with 34 years of teaching experience as a Professor and Head of the Botany Department, has been selected for his contributions to education and social welfare. He has managed to build 10 educational institutes in four different campuses. He has been involved with the Mangala Seva Samiti Trust, the Sharada Group of Educational Institutions, and the RCPHD Trust. He has also started several initiatives like Govanithashraya Trust, which provides shelter to cows and destitute women. He also runs a school for economically deprived and physically challenged children.

The convocation will be presided over by Karnataka Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot and Higher Education Minister Dr Aswath Narayan.
