48 unnatural deaths took place in state’s prisons since 2012

Bengaluru: The State Government has notified the Karnataka High Court that since the year 2012, 48 prisoners have died unnaturally and only one death was given compensation.
This information was provided in response to the courts query on a interest litigation (PIL) petition.
Out of the 48 unnatural deaths, a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh to the wife of prisoner was paid only in one case by the Home department under the order by the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission. The commission has disposed 26 cases and remaining 26 cases are pending.
