Mangaluru: As Afghanistan fell into the hands of the Taliban, anticipating instability Afghan students in Mangaluru University are worried about what lies ahead for them.
18 graduate students, 13 post-graduate students, 22 doctoral students from Afghanistan are studying in the university.
Most of them had come to Mangaluru 2-3 years ago.
Since Monday most of them are seen checking news and their mobile phones inquiring about what is happening in their country.
Some are in tears at the situation and the problems faced by their families back home.
Almost all of the Afghan students have refused to speak to news organisations stating that the issue is “serious and sensitive” as anything they say might result in reprisals for their families in Afghanistan.
Speaking to Udayavani Vice-Chancellor Professor PS Yadapadithaya said that 147 students from 35 countries are pursuing higher education in the university with scholarships from the Government of India. Now that there are problems raging in Afghanistan, the students are a little nervous. The university will arrange everything for them and ensure they do not face any problems.
