A ‘fishy’ day at Hejamady beach

Udupi: It was indeed a fishy day at the Hejamady beach in Udupi, on Wednesday as fish in huge quantity was washed ashore near Amasekariya here.
Residents of Hejamady, Mulki, Yermal and Palimar rushed to the beach to witness the rare phenomenon and grab some of the silverfish – known as Bolanjir in Tulu – for themselves. Several people were seen beaming with smiles while carrying bagfuls of fish for a sumptuous luncheon.
While the reason for this strange occurrence is not known, Dr Prathibha Rohit, principal scientist of Mangalore Research Centre (MRC) of Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Mangaluru has opined that the low oxygen level in the zones at sea may be the cause behind the phenomenon.
