Mangaluru: A TV serial may be fictional but may have a real impact on its audience. One television serial’s fictional depiction of viewer perceptions and behaviors has come under scrutiny.
During the 14th episode of the serial “SeethaRaama,” aired on a private channel, a scene depicting two individuals traveling on a scooter caught the attention of viewers. While the rider was shown wearing a helmet, The actress riding the pillion was not.
A viewer, Jayaprakash Yekkur, a resident of Mangaluru, took note of this scene and promptly lodged a complaint with the Mangaluru City Police Commissioner. Yekkur argued that such depictions of traffic rule violations by actors and actresses could potentially convey a misleading message to viewers, especially impressionable ones. He urged authorities to take appropriate legal action against the actress, the serial’s director, and the broadcasting channel.
Responding to Yekkur’s complaint, the Commissioner of Police referred the matter to the Mangaluru Traffic Police station. Subsequently, notices were issued to the owner of the two-wheeler featured in the scene, and the serial’s director. It was revealed that the scene had been filmed in Nandini Layout, Bengaluru, and was sent to the Rajajinagar police station for further investigation.
On May 10, after conducting inquiries, the Rajajinagar police station levied a fine of Rs 500 on both the actress and the owner of the two-wheeler. Additionally, the production manager of the serial pledged to uphold traffic regulations in future episodes.
Expressing his satisfaction with the outcome, Jayaprakash Yekkur remarked, “I observed a scene depicting riding without a helmet in the serial and raised concerns about its implications. The swift response from the police, including the imposition of a fine, serves as a lesson and contributes to raising awareness among the public.”
