Mangaluru: Former advisor on Educational Reforms to Karnataka Government Prof M R Doreswamy urged the elected representatives to develop the government schools in their constituencies.

Addressing a press conference, Prof. Doreswamy lamented the fact that only a few elected representatives have developed government schools in their constituencies. Recommendations have been made to all the MLAs, MPs and MLCs of the state to adopt three government schools in their constituencies and develop them into model schools. This was also announced in the state budget for 2020-21. However, only a  few MLAs have done so, he said.

Further, he said that the state government seems to be not interested in implementing the recommendations already given for the improvement of the education sector. The process of school adoption has not been completed in chief minister Bommai’s constituency, he said.

Universities, and medical and engineering colleges have been recommended to participate in the school adoption programme. Accordingly, Mangalore University, Srinivas University, and SDM Educational Institutions have adopted and developed 10 schools each, he said.

Prof Doreswamy said that the present system of appointing Vice-Chancellors of Universities is riddled with loopholes and is in need of urgent reforms. Crores of rupees are being spent to be appointed the post of Vice-Chancellors of some universities. A situation has been created where bribes are paid. Therefore, it has been recommended to improve the procedure for selection of vice-chancellors, he said.
