New Delhi: In a riveting match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Afghanistan pulled off a spectacular upset, defeating the defending champions, England, by a margin of 69 runs. The game, marked by impressive displays of skill and determination, saw England fall short of their target, ultimately being bundled out for 215 while chasing a total of 285.
Afghanistan’s victory was anchored by exceptional bowling performances from Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Rashid Khan, who scalped three wickets each. Their precision and strategic prowess kept England’s batsmen on their toes throughout the match. Adding to the onslaught was Mohammad Nabi, who played a crucial role by claiming two wickets.
The foundation for Afghanistan’s triumph was laid by the formidable batting duo of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ikram Alikhil.
Gurbaz exhibited a masterful display, smashing 80 runs, while Ikram contributed a significant 58. Their partnership set the tone for Afghanistan’s innings, with both batsmen exhibiting exceptional technique and temperament.
Off-colour in the first two matches, Afghanistan openers — Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran (28) finally rose to the occasion, scoring the team’s 50 in just 6.3 overs after being sent in to bat.
The Afghan openers meant business and played copy book cricketing shots to score their runs. The duo didn’t take much risk and Gurbaz mainly ruled the roost, taking the attack to the English bowlers.
Not to be overshadowed, Mujeeb Ur Rehman played a crucial knock of 28 off 16 balls, injecting momentum and stability into Afghanistan’s innings during a pivotal phase.
