Mangaluru: After ‘Operation Tiger’, questions raised over no action against parking violations

Operation Tiger, a drive launched by the Mangaluru City Corporation, has cleared street vendors from various parts of the city to ease vehicular and pedestrian traffic. However, a significant question now arises: Why is there no action against vehicles parked on roads, despite the removal of unauthorized street vendors?

Vehicles are being haphazardly parked on major roads, including those near the State Bank bus stand, causing significant disruption to other traffic. Many buildings lack proper parking facilities, leading to public roads being used as parking spaces. Despite recent road expansions, they have not alleviated traffic issues, primarily due to improper parking practices.

Lack of No Parking Signs

Only a few areas have ‘No Parking’ signs, but vehicles continue to be parked at the spot. Previously, a system was in place on P M Rao Road and elsewhere, allowing vehicles to park only on alternative sides of the road each day. This system is no longer active. No action is being taken against parking violations and vehicles parked on footpaths.

Police Silence on Parking Enforcement

While the municipality’s ‘Operation Tiger’ has targeted street vendors, the previously enforced measures against parking violations—such as locking the wheels of offending vehicles and towing them—have ceased. There is growing public concern over why such measures are not being continued.

Unauthorized Auto Rickshaw Parking

Unauthorized parking of auto rickshaws is also on the rise. Even small spaces on the roadside are being occupied by auto rickshaws. Also, areas previously cleared of street vendors are occupied by rickshaws. Public complaints have increased about why authorities are not addressing this issue.
