After Pakistan’s T20 World Cup victory, the “disappointed Pakistani fan” smiled

The ancient adage goes that “every dog has its day,” but in today’s world, you could reword it to “every meme has its day.”

Late on Sunday evening, a first of many types occurred: Pakistan defeated India in the Twenty20 World Cup for the first time ever. Pakistan demolished India by 10 wickets to win a Twenty20 World Cup match against their arch-rivals. Captain Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan both hit unbeaten half-centuries.

Pakistan ended India’s dominance in the T20 World Cup Super 12 stage by defeating them by 10 wickets. In Dubai, Babar (68) and Rizwan (79) tore through the Indian bowling as they guided their team to victory with 13 balls to spare. This was India’s first World Cup defeat in 13 meetings with Pakistan, and it was also their first-ever ten-wicket loss in T20Is.

Two things happened in the cricket world on June 12, 2019: Pakistan lost to Australia, and the Internet meme “Disappointed Pakistani cricket fan” was formed. The supporter had eloquently summed up Pakistan’s squandered opportunity to win the match with his hands on his hips and disappointment written all over his face.

It all started with a two-second gif, and two years later, he’s become an Internet legend known as ‘Disappointed Pakistani cricket fan.’ It hasn’t lost its cult status after two years. Sarim Akhtar, the man in the meme, couldn’t stop grinning after the triumph on Sunday. Akhtar tweeted a photo of himself in a Pakistan jersey, holding up a victory sign and smiling broadly on Twitter.
