Agumbe Ghat at risk due to heavy vehicle traffic

A crack has been discovered near the barrier of the road close to the sunset point of the Agumbe Ghat, sparking fears of its potential collapse. This ghat road, connecting the coastal regions to the hilly hinterland, faces threats of closure due to heavy vehicle traffic.

The area between the 14th turn near the sunset point and the start of the ghat is particularly vulnerable, with a risk of complete collapse if heavy vehicles continue to traverse the narrow road. Numerous heavy vehicles currently navigate this route posing a significant safety risk, locals said.

Retaining walls have been damaged by collisions involving heavy vehicles. Presently, the road at the ghat’s entry is exceedingly narrow, raising doubts about the feasibility of heavy vehicular passage. Residents fear that continued heavy traffic could exacerbate the existing problems.

The ghat is experiencing increased tourist vehicle traffic during school holidays, adding pressure to an already strained roadway. Heavy vehicles also contribute to the congestion. Locals said that urgent repairs to the cracked barrier are necessary to prevent rainwater seepage during the upcoming rainy season, which could lead to significant damage.

Each year, some turns of the ghat witness collapse, sometimes necessitating closure during the rainy season. There is speculation that failure to repair collapsed barrier walls before the onset of monsoons contributes to these recurring issues.

Moreover, residents of Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and surrounding districts rely on the route to access Manipal Hospital. Should traffic disruptions persist, their access and the vital coastal connection with Chikkamagaluru and Shimoga districts will be compromised.

Furthermore, the presence of overhanging branches from large trees flanking the ghat poses visibility challenges for motorists, increasing the risk of accidents. Addressing this issue, along with implementing a drainage system for rainwater, is essential to easing traffic flow and ensuring safety.

In response to these concerns, Dr. K. Vidyakumari, District Collector of Udupi District said that she has raised the issue with the Shivamogga District Deputy Commissioner. Shivamogga DC has assured to dispatch engineers to assess the situation and take necessary action, she added.

Additionally, motorists are advised against using air conditioning while traversing the ghat, as this inhibits the ability of oncoming vehicles to signal their presence, potentially leading to traffic jams and accidents. Instead, a cautious approach with open windows is recommended to mitigate risks.
