Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez entered the red carpet at Met Gala 2021 wearing a white dress by Brother Vellies that had a message “Tax the Rich” written in red on the backside, reported USA Today.
In a conversation with Vogue, the Democratic Congresswoman from New York opened up about her outfit.
She said, “We can’t just play along, but we need to break the fourth wall and challenge some of the institutions. While the Met is known for its spectacle, we should have some conversations about it.”

Although, Alexandria’s message received mixed reactions from the social media users.

This is how dumb @AOC is.
She’s wearing a custom gown at a gala at the Met, which says “TAX the RICH!”
I repeat, she’s
– at a GALA,
– at the MET, in a
– CUSTOM ball gown.Who’s the rich one? pic.twitter.com/ZqSoARrXq5

: "Tax the Rich" rhetoric is empty (and moot) when the goal is to maintain the Capitalist exploitation of the [Class, Race, Gender] Oppressed. The "rich" are still allowed to Economically decimate the "poor." That's what Politicians like AOC don't seem to comprehend! 🤦🏾♂️ pic.twitter.com/kPlLlIyDST

COST OF A TICKET TO THE MET GALA: $30,000
COST OF A FULL TABLE AT THE MET GALA: $275,000

Everyone is talking about “Tax The Rich” because of AOC’s stunt at a gala full of the people she was targeting, where she was invited for free in a free dress… to back up her actual legitimate work on this issue in Congress, and you’re all angry/confused as to why she did it? pic.twitter.com/yQZpnYfVtE

Alexandria gave a befitting reply to the trollers. She wrote, “And before haters get wild flying off the handle, New York elected officials are routinely invited to and attend the Met due to our responsibilities in overseeing and supporting the city’s cultural institutions for the public. I was one of several in attendance in this evening.”
