Alva’s Education Foundation files patent for molecules treating cancer

Mangaluru: Dr M Mohan Alva, chairman of Alva’s Education Foundation, Moodbidri said that the Foundation has applied for a patent for the synthesizing of two molecules which can permanently cure cancer.

The research team consisting of a postgraduate student, two doctoral students, faculty staff and a collaborator from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai synthesized many organic molecules two of which, (2Z) 1-(5-methylfuran-2-yl)-3-(4-nitrophenyl) prop-2-en-1-one (MFNP) and (2Z) 1-(2, 5-dimethylthiophen-3-yl)-3-(2, 4, 6-trimethoxyphenyl)prop-2-en-1-one (DMTTP) have exhibited high cancer-inhibiting properties.

The cancer-treating properties of these molecules were tested at the Tata Cancer Institute in Mumbai where both of them showed good cancer-fighting properties against blood, prostate and breast cancer as well as leukaemia.

Further technical trials are underway before they can be tested on humans.
