Alva’s Virasat: Cultural events conclude

Moodbidri: The five-day-long cultural extravaganza, Alva’s Virasat, came to a grand conclusion on Saturday night with the return of the Samskruthika Ratha (Cultural Chariot) to its original position. The chariot, which had moved leftward on the stage at the beginning of the event, ceremoniously returned to its right position amidst jubilant celebrations.

The festivities were marked by dazzling fireworks, vedic chants, devotional hymns, floral palanquins, and joyous cheers from the audience. Accompanied by traditional music, the cultural chariot was pulled across the main stage, symbolizing the conclusion of the event. A ceremonial flag-lowering further marked the end of the cultural programs.

The chariot procession included statues of deities like Ram and Krishna, positioned in the main chariot, while smaller chariots carried idols of Ganapati, Hanuman, Mahalakshmi, and Saraswati.

Devotional fervor soared as bhajan groups from Mysuru, Pandharpur, and Mangaluru Hare Krishna groups performed melodious hymns. Traditional sounds of cymbals, horns, and drums resonated as women carried ceremonial pots and folk performers like tiger dancers and apsaras enhanced the spirit of the event.

A special Ganga Arati was performed by the Vipul Sharma-led team from Haridwar amidst vedic chants, creating a divine ambiance. The Alva’s Education Foundation President, Dr. M Mohan Alva, along with Trustee Vivek Alva and other dignitaries, offered floral tributes to the chariot.

More Attractions on Sunday

While cultural programs have concluded, the exhibitions and fairs will continue on Sunday, December 15. With over 750 stalls, ranging from agriculture, handicrafts, food, and flower shows, the fair is open from 9 AM to 10 PM, offering families a chance to enjoy the day.

Speaking to the media, Dr. M Mohan Alva expressed his satisfaction with the successful completion of the event. He noted that the 30th edition of Alva’s Virasat upheld its legacy without any compromises.

“Every day witnessed a large turnout, and I am happy that the public enjoyed the programs thoroughly. Unlike previous editions, where audiences would leave immediately after the first event, this time, an average of 20,000 people stayed till the end each day,” said Dr. Alva.

He acknowledged the challenges posed by rain during the preparation stage, which had disrupted arrangements in the agricultural fair area. However, the favorable weather during the event helped restore normalcy.

“This year’s edition has been exceptional in terms of cleanliness, punctuality, discipline, and systematic execution. Our team of volunteers, including scouts and guides, efficiently managed the large crowds without requiring police assistance,” he added.

Dr. Alva assured that while cultural programs are over, visitors can still enjoy the fairs on Sunday, making it a perfect weekend getaway.
