The appointment of the chancellor for Mangalore University is in its final stages, with three strong contenders under consideration. The search committee has conducted crucial meetings and is in the process of submitting its report to the government. It is anticipated that a new chancellor will be named within the next few weeks.

The three prominent names in contention are:

Retired Prof. Muzaffar Assadi, Department of Political Science, Mysore, V.V.
Prof. P.L. Dharma, former Chancellor (Administration) of Mangalore V.V.
Prof. Kishore Kumar C.K, Director of Physical Education Department, Mangalore V.V.

The search committee comprises members from the Governor’s office, the Government, the UGC, and Mangalore V.V. An essential meeting of the committee was recently held, and its report will be submitted to the Principal Secretary of the Department of Higher Education. From there it will be presented to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for his recommendation to the Governor.

If the Governor approves the suggested name, it will become final. Otherwise, the Governor may propose an alternative name, which will then be considered by the Government before the final appointment.

Notably, Mangalore V.V. has been without a chancellor since June, when the previous chancellor, P. Subrahmanya Yadapadithaya, retired after serving the post for four years. This time, there is heightened curiosity about who will fill the position, as the last chancellor was a native of Mangalore, breaking the trend of non-local chancellors.

A total of 108 applications were received for the chancellor’s position this time. After initial shortlisting, the search committee will finalize 10 names and submit them to the government.

This appointment holds significance not only for Mangalore University but also for four other universities in the state with pending chancellor appointments, including Mysuru, Ballari, Shivamogga, and Belagavi. The Governor and the Government will likely consider various factors in making these appointments.
