Are Indian-Americans happy with Kamala Harris?
Team Udayavani, Aug 22, 2020, 1:29 PM IST
Kamala Harris was announced as the Democratic vice-presidential candidate by Joe Biden and she became the first Black and South Asian American woman to run on a major political party’s presidential ticket
After the announcement Indians around the world were quick to celebrate the news. Although, Indian Americans make up over 1% of the US population, they have become increasingly active as a constituency and donors in recent years.
However, sources claim, Kamala Harris’ selection has generated mixed reactions from about 3.9 million Indian-Americans. While a few claim that they are proud of her, others have doubts of her being able to handle various critical issues
Also, CNN report claims, Trump’s partnership with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been well-received by both Indians and Indian Americans.
It is said that Kamala Harris has always claimed to be of African descent rather than Indian. As reported by India today, Indian American citizens claim that Harris calls herself Black, hates Indian side of her family, never recognised herself as an Indian. She is unaware of the atrocities of Kashmiri Hindus and has aligned with Pakistan.
However, she has also gained a lot of supporters due to her popularity among the Indian diaspora. It is for us to see whether Indian Americans will support Kamala Harris and Joe Biden in the coming Presidential Election keeping her Indian descent in mind.
