Assam student at M’luru University alleges ragging in hostel

Mangaluru: In a complaint to the national anti-ragging helpline on Tuesday evening, a first year MSc student from Mangalore University has alleged of being ragged by a fellow hostel inmate. He has accused the inmate of humiliating, abusing and manhandling him. The victim in question is an inmate of Sowparnika hostel here.
In his complaint the victim alleged that he was beaten and abused by a student belonging to another PG course.
On Wednesday, the anti-ragging committee set up by Mangalore University investigated the allegation based on the complaint and prima facie indicated of such an incident to have taken place. A report in this connection will be submitted to the University Grants Commission (UGC) by the committee.
Apparently, during the investigation the victim, who comes from Assam and speaks only Hindi revealed how he was ragged by a hostel inmate. He informed that one of his seniors had borrowed a pair of slippers from him for a cultural programme. Post the event, the victim requested the senior to return the borrowed slippers since the victim wanted to visit the beach, but the senior was busy and failed to return the lent slippers on time. The victim added that he met the senior when he was with his roommate Anil who is an accused in the case.
When the victim again demanded his senior to give him back his slipper the senior decided to return it back. But the slippers were not returned by the senior and instead, Anil visited the victim’s room to return back the goods. The victim and the accused live in separate hostels. The victim alleged that the accused failed to return the slippers in a proper manner and instead threw them at him, abused and even manhandled him. The victim further alleged that the accused had demanded that the victim converse in Kannada as he is in Karnataka.
In his complaint to the anti-ragging helpline, he stated that he was a linguistic minority, felt insecure and as an outsider in the university campus.
The accused claimed innocence and alleged that the victim had abused them first.
The Anti-Ragging Committee set-up by the university have met, informed Kishori Nayak, in-charge VC, Mangalore University on Wednesday and added that he was unaware of the agenda during the meeting as he was out do station.
