Assault and robbery case: 5 sentenced to 7 years of imprisonment

Mangaluru: Five persons were sentenced to seven years of imprisonment by the Fourth Additional District and Sessions Court in connection to an assault and robbery case on Saturday April 20th. Irfan (39), Mohammed Musthafa (30), Sameer (27), Mohammed Irgan (35) and Dillon Avinash Cardoza (28), all residents of Bantwal taluk are the convicts.

As per the chargesheet filed with the court, the accused had barged into a garment shop owned by Kanayalal Gupta at Hampankatta on March 13 2013, damaged the laptop and attacked Mr Gupta with knife and iron rod. They then took the Rs 28,500 cash available in the shop and left.

On receiving a complaint regarding the incident from Mr Gupta, Mangaluru North police station Inspector Shantharam filed a case under IPC sec 143, 142, 148, 448, 323, 324, 427, 395 and 397 and submitted the chargesheet to the court.

Post the due investigation, Judge Mallana Gowda of the Fourth Additional District and Sessions Court found the accused guilty of their crime. The judge sentenced the convicts to 7 years of imprisonment under IPC sec 397 (Robbery) and each accused was slapped a penalty of Rs 10,000. The convicts were also fined Rs 5,000 under different IPC sections. The total penalty of Rs 1 lakh must be given as compensation to the victim Mr Gupta, ruled the judge. Public prosecutor Harishchandra Udyavar argued in favour of the prosecution.
