Bagalkot: In order to extort money from a man who won Rs 50 lakh at Goa casino, miscreants kidnapped his niece in Bagalkot district.

Police officials arrested 5 persons in the case. The arrested accused have been identified as Bheerappa, Praphulla, Eeranna, Vishwanath and Krishna, all of whom worked as cab drivers.

It is said that the man had been to Goa along with his friend Bheerappa and tried his luck in a casino and won Rs 50 lakh.

Bheerappa then hatched a plot to extort the money from him by kidnapping his 7-year-old niece. She was kidnapped by the accused while she was on her way to tuition on   October 27.

The accused then called her uncle for ransom. However, the girl’s mother filed a police complaint on the same day.

As the culprits were using multiple SIM cards brought from a local dealer to make calls, the dealer was questioned and the cops were able to establish the identity of the accused.

Police then laid a trap and managed to arrest the four accused when they came to drop the child and pick up the ransom amount near a park in Bagalkot. Another accomplice, Vishwanath, who was on the run, was arrested on Monday.

Lokesh B Jagalasar, the district’s superintendent of police said that the child was rescued and accused arrested within 18 hours of kidnapping and the police team probing the case has been rewarded with Rs 25,000 for their efforts.
