#BanNetflixInIndia is trending worldwide with over 34,000 tweets. Netflix in the past few years has released region-specific original content in its streaming platform. Series like Sacred Games, Laila, Ghoul which released specifically catering to the Indian audience have received criticism, both good and bad. But why are these shows embroiled in controversy?
Recently, Ramesh Solanki a member of the Shiv Sena’s IT cell accusing Netflix of “deep-rooted Hinduphobia” had lodged a police complaint against the online streaming service for “defaming the country” and portraying “an incorrect picture” of India through the shows like Sacred Games, Leila, Ghoul and the comedy talk show Patriot Act hosted by Hasan Minhaj streamed on its platform.
Filed complaint against @NetflixIndia for defaming Hindus, India and @adgpi
Almost every series is serious attemp to paint Hindus and India in bad light@ippatel @TajinderBagga @RituRathaur@MrsGandhi @ShefVaidya @MODIfiedVikas @AskAnshul @UnSubtleDesi @muglikar_ @mirchagalib pic.twitter.com/BCe4G0hGy4— Ramesh Solanki (@Rajput_Ramesh) September 4, 2019
“I urge the authorities to look into all of the above-mentioned content and take the necessary steps from summoning their team to cancelling their licenses as deemed fit. One cannot allow an incorrect generalisation based on bogus rhetoric trying to defame a religious minority, that is, Hindu in countries other than India,” he said in his complaint.
However, even the Twitterati seemed to be irked with these shows and expressed their displeasure on the social media platform with hashtags like #BanNetflixIndia. Here’s what social media users are saying:
.@NetflixIndia released a trailer of its show Leila which was set to premiere on the 14th of June. The show appears to depict a dystopian future where Hindu nationalists have managed to capture the machinery of the state.

I don’t support #BanNetflixInIndia. But from Leila to Sacred Games, #Netflix is commissioning content in India disrespectful and hurtful for Hindus.
Tolerance can’t be consent to be targeted. Instead of baying for ban, just unsubscribe Netflix. Watch Hotstar, Amazon Prime, Zee5— Abhijit Majumder (@abhijitmajumder) September 6, 2019
Anurag Kashyap and the makers of the Sacred Games have been part of the controversy for pushing Hindu-phobic content in their show.
